A country's National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) is the foundation of its quality assurance system. Comprised of four key pillars—standardization, metrology, accreditation, and conformity assessment—the NQI ensures products meet strict quality and safety standards. This framework is vital for protecting consumers, promoting fair trade, and driving economic growth.

The Thai herbal industry, a growing sector with deep cultural roots, is leveraging its NQI to transform its traditional products into high-quality goods recognized globally. This move not only safeguards public health but also allows Thailand to capitalize on its rich natural heritage.

The National Institute of Metrology (NIMT), a core component of the NQI, plays a critical role. Its work in metrology ensures the accuracy of measurements used to test active ingredients and detect contaminants. This scientific validation is essential for proving the safety and effectiveness of herbal products and meeting international regulations.

NIMT's efforts include developing more than six high-purity certified reference materials (CRMs), which are essential for laboratory analysis and instrument calibration. Recognizing the need for regulatory compliance, NIMT has also created specialized CRMs to test for specific active ingredients and potential contaminants. Furthermore, NIMT provides extensive support to testing laboratories, offering training and consulting services to help them achieve ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. The institute also conducts proficiency testing programs, which are crucial for external quality control.

Ultimately, a strong NQI, supported by NIMT's expertise, builds international confidence in Thai herbal products. When measurement results are traceable to international standards, they are accepted by trading partners worldwide. This removes technical barriers to trade, enabling Thai entrepreneurs to export their products to lucrative markets like the European Union and the United States, and shifting the industry from a traditional domestic market to a globally competitive one.
